'MacDonald had a huge influence on me . . . Reacher is like a fully detached version of Travis McGee' LEE CHILD

Travis McGee isn’t your typical knight in shining armour. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple He’ll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

Travis McGee’s old army buddy needs a favour. His sister’s fiancé has just been murdered in what the authorities claim was a standard Manhattan mugging. But Nina knows better. Her soon-to-be husband had been looking too closely at his firm’s books, and he’d found that the numbers weren’t adding up.

Travis is determined to get to the bottom of things, but just as he’s closing in on the truth he finds himself taken captive. Some people will go to any lengths to make sure their secrets don’t get out . . .

First published in 1964, A Nightmare in Pink features an introduction by Lee Child

JOHN D. MACDONALD A GRAND MASTER CRIME WRITER

'The great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller' - Stephen King

'Travis McGee is my favourite fiction detective. He’s great because he has a philosophical side – he will fight a bunch of mobsters in a car park and then have a muse about life, the universe and everything' - Tony Parsons

'A dominant influence on writers crafting the continuing series character . . . I envy the generation of readers just discovering Travis McGee' - Sue Grafton

'The consummate pro, a master storyteller and witty observer . . . The Travis McGee novels are among the finest works of fiction ever penned by an American author and they retain a remarkable sense of freshness' - Jonathan Kellerman

'. . . my favorite novelist of all time' - Dean Koontz

'A master storyteller, a masterful suspense writer . . . John D. MacDonald is a shining example for all of us in the field' - Mary Higgins Clark

'What a joy that these timeless and treasured novels are available again' - Ed McBain

'There’s only one thing as good as reading a John D. MacDonald novel reading it again . . . He is the all-time master of the American mystery novel' - John Saul

A Nightmare in Pink Introduction by Lee Child Travis McGee No 2 eBook John D MacDonald

This novel is nearly 50 years old and it holds up well. But it has differences to present day novels of the same genre. There is violence but not graphic violence. There is lots of sex but it is not overdone or explicit. There are no guns or explosives at all. And there are psychedelic drugs used not for recreation but given to hapless victims. Yet despite what would be regarded today as shortcomings the reader's edge-of-the-seat interest is held to the end.

It is great to read a story that requires imagination and understanding.

A Nightmare in Pink Introduction by Lee Child Travis McGee No 2 eBook John D MacDonald Reviews

Too many deaths in this one. Characters were dropping like flies.
Liked the ending though, good person received a benefit even though too many people had to die to achieve this end.
Lee Child, absolutely a grouse crime writer. Great plots and escapism at its best. Can't put the book down til completed.
A good read
Johnn D McDonald set the tone for many of the writers of today. Travis McGee set the tone for many writers of today.

And we are all better off for both!
I've come to the Travis Magee novels on Lee Child's endorsement. This is the second in the series, and just the second I've read. I like the hard-boiled first person narrative. I also enjoy the fact that Magee is flawed, and, while incredibly street smart and savvy, is not as smart as he might think he is. A cynical white knight, witty like Chandler's Marlowe, but not as much a force of nature as Reacher. A good read.
This is the second book in the Travis McGee series. It has an interesting plot and is generally entertaining but it is not the sort of book you cant put down. It has a good amount of bedroom action that is presented in a generally tasteful way. I enjoyed this book but I dont think it is as good as "A Purple Place for Dying".
