Reviews
“When I contemplate the Holy Family, I often wonder about those ‘hidden years’ -- the decades left biblically undescribed that laid the foundation for Jesus Christ's public ministry. In Working Mother, Erin McCole Cupp offers us one possible scenario in a story that is emotionally gripping and filled with heart. Based on known biblical precepts, Working Mother contemplates the depths of Mary and Joseph's ‘yes’ to God's will for their lives."
Lisa M. Hendey, author of The Grace of Yes and Founder of CatholicMom.com

“It's not often that we're given a look at the Virgin Mary as a real person without somehow finding her diminished. And yet, that's exactly what McCole-Cupp does in this novella. It's not only a delightful read, but one that will increase your appreciation for the Mother of God.”
Sarah Reinhard, Author and Blogger, SnoringScholar.com

“Working Mother is an intimate and compelling glimpse into the lives of the Holy Family during their exile in Egypt. Reading [Working Mother ]helped me to understand a bit of the physical and emotional struggles that the Holy Family might have faced in their daily lives. I came away with a greater respect for their strength and a greater empathy for their humanity. Well done!”
Laura Nelson, CatholicMom.com contributor, Green4God.blogspot.com blogger

“As a working mother, it’s hard to find time to read for enjoyment. A novella rich with imagery and pulsing with palpable faith, Working Mother is not to be missed. You will find yourself seeing through the eyes of Mary only to look back at yourself. If you struggle coming to terms with working outside of the home and living out your vocation as wife and mother, this is a must read.”

“Erin McCole Cupp's 'Working Mother' pulls us into the daily life of the Holy Family. The story portrays how the Lord creates miracles from the mundane, answering prayers and weaving the tapestry of our lives in the most unpredictable of ways. I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. The writing was excellent and the tone was reflective. Prayerfully read, Cupp's story is edifying.”
AnnMarie Creedon, Author, Angela’s Song

“Imagine the Holy Family's journey to Egypt from an inside perspective. How might Mary have been called upon to be faithful in the details of supporting her family? How might Joseph have grown in his relationship with God as his son? Enjoy a refreshing perspective of an ancient journey through vivid details, drawing us closer to God.”
A. K. Frailey, Author, The Road Goes Ever On A Christian Journey Through The Lord of the Rings

“Erin McCole Cupp gives the term “working mother” an unexpected twist in this thought-provoking story. Imagine a different time, a different place, and a familiar figure thrust into a role never imagined. Then stir in sacrificial giving with no guarantees and without a roadmap…”

This novella was not what I was expecting - it exceeded my expectations. I imagined reading a genteel story typically indicative of the ones I heard when I was young about the Blessed Mother, but instead I was able to delve into her humanity much more clearly. Erin Cupp is gifted in not just storytelling but in making people come alive, in permitting the reader to become more than acquainted with the characters - to become friends with them.

Our Lady became much more relevant to me through reading about her in "Working Mother." Even in my relatively special relationship with her, I felt as if she became someone like me, a wife, mother and woman who truly walks with me every day in the mundane and ordinary or even cumbersome moments of my life.

There is a relief in knowing the possibilities of what Our Lady's life may have been during those silent years before Jesus' public ministry - to imagine her thoughts, her ideas or even her emotions and interactions in her marriage. These are tangible in this story, and in the simple manner in which the story is told, the power of the timeless Holy Family becomes modern, fresh, and new.

Beautiful perspective on a "what if" story. I had never really thought about the day to day real life example of Mary's life. I often forget she had concerns just as any mother does...this was a great reminder. Very easy read but great story!
This short story shares the author's contemplation on how the Holy Family may have worked through the realities of their circumstances. This brief narrative incorporates a myriad of frailties and emotions which remind the reader that, though blessed, they were human.
This story beautifully touches the heart-ache of a mother going without her child for the sake of her child and the way God's works are for the greater good, although I apparent as we live through it.
This is a very short piece
Lovely, imaginative novella about Mary in Egypt with Joseph and the child Jesus. It explored themes I hadn't really considered before and helped me relate to her in a way that I, a working mother, had not done before.
I am a mother of six children and although I would give my life for any of them, I often think of other things I might like to do outside of caretaking and homemaking. Like when the toddler is having his sixth meltdown for the day because I gave him the wrong color sippy cup, I wonder if I might be good at a desk job where I speak to adults all day long, wear tailored suits and high heels, and drink hot coffee in between board meetings. While I know being a working mom has its disadvantages, I have trouble thinking about those when responding to a red-faced and hysterical two year old. If I'm honest, even on good parenting days, I think about things I would like to do outside of my vocation as a stay at home wife and mother.

Recently, a priest suggested to me that I ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to help me in all my daily duties. "She knows what your life is like," he said. "Go to her."

But here's the thing Mary was chaste and poor and way more obedient than I ever hope to be...so it's tough for me to relate to her...which is why this beautiful short story was so helpful.

In Working Mother, Erin McCole Cupp creates a plausible scenario where Mother Mary is relatable, where she is like me in the way she strives to lay down her own will in order to do something to help her family. This hypothetical situation shed insight into how the only perfect Mother to have ever walked the earth is jsut the Saint to pray to in order to help me, especially as I struggle to embrace things I would rather avoid--like the temper tantrums of overtired toddlers.
Finishing this left me with a longing to read more. In this short novella on The Holy Family, the role of working mother, step father, blended family - all of the same sacrifices families are still making today are there. In an account we hear over and over, Erin McCole Cupp turns over a small stone and finds a mirror just beneath that reflects all we are and all we fret over. I've read this a few times, and ever time I can see myself in the scene. This is just a story that grips and doesn't let go because it's "real" historical fiction. This novella is a guide, a consolation and a meditation all in one. And for .99??! A steal!
