Lev Grossman’s background in comparative literature (Yale and Harvard) is obvious as The Magician’s Land… concludes a trilogy that seems like a spin-off of Harry Potter, Tolkien, mythology and more but with a more mature atmosphere. Yes, the world of magic that our hero Quentin inhabits makes just about any imaginative idea come to life but it’s all got purpose attached to it that has a moral, philosophical and practical bend that makes it even more engaging to readers!
Quentin has committed some dastardly act for which he was ejected from the magical world of Fillory, an act in which he supposedly lost his one and only love who died during that awful time. Since then, he’s been humbled to a large degree and is learning much about himself from reflecting on where he went wrong and who he really is. He returns to his alma mater, Brakebills College, a renowned (and only) school for magic where he becomes a teacher of “mending small things.” For this it seems is his main gift as a magician. He’s actually settling in quite nicely when his world again comes crashing down and he is fired from Brakebills. Before long he receives an invitation that will dramatically change his life for the better – or perhaps worse, let the reader decide.
The invitation is verbalized by a black bird who, after weeding out the losers in the crowd, explains their quest is to find a old, shabby, but quality case that is locked with magic and possesses something very important although those seeking it don’t know what’s in it. Quentin and Plum thus begin an absolutely phenomenal quest, in one way related to her family Chatwin’s past and Fillory, although they don’t know that when they start their journey. They also don’t realize that their search will go awry, leading them to a totally different quest of far larger significance.
Quentin and Plum’s adventures are mesmerizing as they include changing into animals, studying bonding construction of matter and energy, flying as dragons, engaging with demi-gods and gods (and not all benevolent), constructing labyrinths, meeting ghosts, and so much more than this brief synopsis could possibly cite but with one clear distinction of being a wonderful, wonderful read. As a matter of fact, one might even want to read it several times as there are so many magnificent parts to relish! Quentin believes that magic, ultimately, is to make the world a better place and treat each other accordingly – let the reader decide how he accomplishes that ideal! Highly recommended and wow, what a film this would make!

It has been quite a while since I finished this book. I always feel reluctant to write a review when I struggle with whether I liked it or not or whether, if it is part of a series, I liked the overall series. In general, I feel I liked this series. I certainly liked this book much more than the second....The Magician King.

In reading other reviews, I feel that this book ends the series in a way that satisfies me and wraps up a few things we were wondering about. After blundering about for three books, Quentin gets to be a hero of sorts and restored Filliory with the help of Julia who has almost become a god. I thought she was gone after book 2 and I was glad to see her in this one. Perhaps the best part of this book, at least for me, was getting to known Janet a whole lot better. Prior to this book, she showed strength but seemed whiny and self absorbed. She still is but showed a resourcefulness that we had not seen before. Made her much more interesting.

Quentin, Elliot, Janet, Alice, Julia and Penny figured prominently in this book and at least for me it was nice to see them all together if even for a minute.

One thing I can truly agree with as far as the other reviewers are concerned, SyFy really screwed the pooch as far as the TV series is concerned. The show appears to have little or no correlation with the books. Sad, the books are so much better.

So, I enjoyed the books....mostly. I would advise anyone interested in this series to read the books first and only then watching the SyFy program, if you must.
The Magician’s Land is the third and final installment of Grossman’s superb fantasy tale of magician-with-angst Quentin Coldwater and his friends, most but not al l of whom attended or graduated from the magically camouflaged Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic. Quentin has been the lead character in all three novels, a man growing up but always faintly out of his proper place. That indeed has been the dominant theme of these wondrous novels Quentin’s exceptionally slow growth to maturity. And part of the reason that these books resonate so strongly with readers is that Quentin’s dilemma isn’t so far different from most of ours everyone thinks him(her)self special but the world doesn’t always realize our specialness and the adjustment between uncaring world and self deeply caring about its own trajectory is all too common to our own experience of living. That’s one of the reason these nooks are so affecting they tap into our personally felt experiences and feelings.

Join that with a glorious fantasy adventure and you have a recipe for success unequalled since Philip Pullman’s somewhat similar His Dark Materials trilogy. Neither Pullman nor Grossman espouses a world where bravery, virtue and a positive outlook resolve all. Rather, they appropriate the materials of epic adventure and the excitement of magic to write high adventures that feature heroes and heroines we could conceivably see as us, though more magicked of course.

All of the characters of the first two books come back in this one. Eliot, now High King of the magical kingdom of Fillory, formerly gay but more than that snide, is now responsible and much more human he truly cares about the fate of Fillory, which is going through a crisis –well, not a crisis, more like Armageddon, the End, the alt-world’s final Running Down. Janet, bitchy as ever, is there to help him, but so are Poppy and Josh, and Julia, always problematic, hovers around the edge for part of the story. There are new characters as swell, most notably Plum, about whom I won’t say more than that there are surprises in her past that feed directly into the story and history of Fillory.

There is an even more startling twist to this story but you’ll have to read it to find out what it is.

There is a lovely but almost throwaway paragraph forty pages into the book that captures its essence Quentin is back in Brakebills, ten years older and no longer king of Fillory, just a very junior and temporary junior instructor there.

"Pacing the aisles of a silent classroom, surveying the exposed napes of rows and rows of students bent over their fall exams, he realized he’d lost his old double vision, the one that was always looking for something more, somewhere else, the world behind the world. It was his oldest possession, and he’d let it slip away without even noticing it was gone. He was becoming someone else, someone new."

That’s what this book is about ultimately, growing up and becoming someone else, someone new. But en route the author tells us a rousing good story. These three novels are among the very best fantasy novels and also among the most grown up.
